Important Electrical Safety Tips for Kids

Electricity is a wonderful modern-day convenience, but it can be a safety concern. For this reason, it is important to keep in mind the safety of others in the home, especially children, when considering electrical factors. Implement these tips around the home to ensure the safety of the family’s youngest members.

Play Places Should Be Away From Outlets

Children love to play, and toys can quickly accumulate all over the home. Chances are there is a designated place in every room where kids play. People often set up play shelves or a place for toy storage in bedrooms and living rooms. For safety, these play areas should be kept away from outlets or other electrical devices. Outside, children should know to keep balls and other outside equipment away from power lines or electrical boxes as it could be dangerous to go near these electrical devices. If a device is hit or damaged while children are playing, don’t wait to call an experienced electrician to make repairs as soon as possible to avoid damage or safety concerns.

Keep Power Strips Out of Reach of Children

Power strips often come in handy when you need to plug in several things all in one area. However, the more plugs that are out and in the reach of children, the more likely they are to try and mess with them, increasing the danger of electrical shock. For this reason, when using a power strip, be sure to secure the power strip and plugs where children can’t see or reach them. Keep them up high or in rooms that children don’t frequently enter. If you need to install outlets in areas of high use that can limit the use of power strips, contact a trusted electrician.

Cover Up Outlets

One of the number one things electricians recommend you do to protect children from electrical shock is to cover all outlets in the home, especially the ones not in use. Even if you don’t have toddlers, keeping outlets covered can still be beneficial. There are also outlet covers made to open and close as things are plugged and unplugged to even prevent electrical shock when something is unplugged. Another added benefit of using outlet covers is it will help conserve energy by keeping cold drafts out. It’s a great idea no matter what age children are in the home.

The safety of the young ones inside your home is important. Be aware of any electrical problem areas and do your best to keep kids away from these areas or set up boundaries that will protect children. If you don’t know what areas could be dangerous or you want to modify some areas of concern, contact our knowledgeable electricians at Turner Electric.
