Electrical Safety Tips for Summer

Summer is upon us, and that means days by the pool, lots of outdoor fun, and tons of family time. Here at Turner Electric, our Benbrook electricians want you to have the best and safest summer yet, so we’ve put together our top tips for electrical safety for the summer months. Follow these guidelines and you’ll have the safe and fun summer you’ve been looking forward to!

Be Aware of Water

Water fun is a huge part of summer. From water tables and sprinklers in the yard, to slip and slides and water slide bounce houses at the park, to hanging out at the pool all afternoon, water is a main component in so many summer days. But water and electricity absolutely do not mix, so our team of Benbrook electricians encourage you to be wary around water, particularly when electricity is nearby or involved in some way.  Start by keeping all your electrical or battery-operated toys away from the water. Don’t touch or play with anything electrical when you’re standing in water or even wet. Make sure all the electrical components of your pools, wet bounce houses, hot tubs, and more are fully grounded and set up properly.

Know Where the Shutoff Is

In the event of a problem, a Benbrook electrician should be one of the first people you call. But in the meantime, be sure you know where your shutoffs are. This may mean your water shutoff, your electrical box, circuit breakers, and so on. Know what to do in an emergency so that you can keep everyone as safe as possible.

Watch the Weather

Although it doesn’t have to do with the electricity coming from your home, keep an eye on the weather and be aware of thunderstorms and lightning. Summer storms are common in many parts of the country, and while it can be fun to play in the rain, you should not be outdoors during a thunderstorm. People can be injured or killed from lightning strikes, so stay away from nature’s electricity.

Avoid Power Lines

Whether they’re downed or not, avoid power lines at all costs. This means you shouldn’t climb trees near them, throw things at them or onto them, fly kites, airplanes, drones, and so on near them, or attempt to retrieve anything from them. Stay away from utility poles while you’re at it, since Benbrook electricians often have to work on and near them and you can compromise their safety and your own by doing things you shouldn’t do near utility poles.

Finally, if you have any electrical problems and need a Benbrook electrician, don’t hesitate to call Turner Electric
